- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025Melissa and Doug products are always good quality and worth buying! I bought this one for teaching preschoolers and I like how sturdy it is. Wooden puzzles last longer when you are traveling from house to house to teach the little ones. I like that is has upper and lower case letters because they need to learn both. It is good for memorization and also matching the upper case letter with the lower. Now that I am retired I use this puzzle to teach my grandsons. I definitely recommend this.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2010I would give this one six stars if I could. My girl's 20 mo's, and in the 2 months we've been playing with this alphabet she's learned an amazing amount. Plus, she LOVES it. She only knows a few of the letters by their actual names, but when she picks up almost every letter here she can state the picture associated with it. So, 'I' isn't 'I,' but "ice cubes," and W is 'watch,' etc. She's never even seen a jellybean, but she screams "jellybean!" when she grabs the J. Awesome. It's a great challenge for her little fingers too - her dexterity has improved from initially just slapping the letters down in the approximate region of where they belonged, to lots of twisting and turning to slot each one and now, finally, she can place them correctly about half the time. I love that the letters that could be symmetric, like the Z, aren't, and that the u and n are the same color - it's more interesting this way! Yes, the pictures underneath the letters are unusual... and I'd much rather use this opportunity to teach her what a quail is than have her know only the ubiquitous 'Queen' as her Q-word. I only gave three stars for durability because the letters are not appropriate for chewing upon. They're quite substantial dry, but need to be kept out of little mouths. Just another reason to play with this one together at first.
Update. A few years later, we love it as much as before. Whatever letters were chewed upon show some wear, but the rest of the set still looks great.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 201327 mo old loves the alphabet and this puzzle. The downside is that the pieces are a little small - there is a "warning not for children under 3 years" on there. But developmentally this is an appropriate toy for a child who recognizes all their capital letters and is learning lower case, so we just supervise play with it. Or for a child learning to recognize any letters, but you'll have to be more involved.
The letters are the same color (as in both A and a are red) so I think that helps reinforce that they are the same letter.
We can practice letter sounds as she puts the pieces in. That's nice. Plus, there are pics of words that start with each letter under the letter so that is nice!
The lower case n and u are slight different which makes it easier for me to know which goes where, but not different enough for my 2 yo to understand.
Takes a lot of time to complete for someone learning letters / keeps her busy.
Overall is one or the favorite Christmas presents and I think there are hours of learning ahead.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018Okay, my 4 year old absolutely loves this board. I have a few minor complaints that obviously don't slow him down any but am going to start with the good stuff.....
These are well made and durable with bright colors, letters and a sturdy accompanying board. The pictures under each letter are clear for the most part there are a couple where I was like, really? why would you opt for that picture on a kids board? Should my 4 year old be able to identify that? "Hey Tom(husband) can you tell me what this is and if Grayson should know it too?" Some just seemed like they could have been made simpler I guess. (maybe that should have been put with the complaints... sorry, I ramble ya know). But the letters stay in their respective spaces and some, as discovered by Grayson, you can even put in their spaces backwards and they still fit! What craziness is this!?!?!?! He thought that was pretty awesome.
Now. For my overall minor complaints outside of some of the pictures chosen:
1. The pieces are super thin. They are hard to get out of their spots without just flipping the board and letting them go everywhere. This does seem to be more of an issue for my husband and myself than the kid. Minor but still irritating.
2. There are several pieces that are near impossible, even to an Alphabet -seasoned eye, to tell which letter it actually is. The letters will only fit in their designated spot so there really shouldn't be any 2 or 3 or 5 letters so close that you can't tell them apart. The lower case 'i' and lowercase 'l' are the simplest to discern but only because of the very-faint-but-there recessed ridge near the 'dot'. The 'b', 'd', 'p' and even 'q'? OMG! all 3 of us will have to try each letter in each spot. Now I know that you may be looking at the picture and saying "goodness, she does know that each letter set are colored coded right?" but please trust me. When you have a pile of 52 letters and there are very few, if any other letters on there, or perhaps just none of the Capital letters yet as a reference for what color lowercase letter you are looking for it is like, Seriously???
Overall my son is happy, ecstatic even and loves to show everyone his new "puzzle", asking me to play with him a dozen times a day. My complaints in the big scheme of things really are minor. Would still highly recommend this product to anyone with a kid or kids or nieces or nephews or grand-kids, well you get the idea. My complaints are good to be aware of but far from a reason to not purchase this set.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality is pretty disappointing
Looking for material to tie in upper and lower case for my 3yr old who loves puzzles. Experience with M&D has not been too bad, decided to give this a go, albeit expensive, given that it's one of the few alphabet puzzles that included both upper and lower.
Disappointed at the quality and presentation of the puzzle as a whole - the material is flimsy, looks cheap, most importantly for learning, some of the letters in particular i and j are so poorly made that they are identifiable because they are next to I and J but not the actual alphabets themselves. Very poor and lack of attention to detail especially when you consider that M&D specializes in early learning.
Add: several adjustment needed to be made to the alphabets to make learning clearer and more precise - particularly poor would be i, j, s. Extremely disappointing considering the price of the product. The material is cheap, and unsafe - the alphabets are not cut well with Tiny wood splinters that are hazardous to young children.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good purchase
My 2 year old loves it but it is a little difficult to differentiate between the lower case characters for a toddler. Some of them look too similar to each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars très bon produit
Enfin un puzzle avec minuscule et majuscule
les dessins sont sympas
seul bémol, les pièces ne supporte d'être mouillées, le vernis supérieur se décolle
