Fall Theme Addition Practice: Numbers 1-10

Our homeschool day this year consists of indoor activities + lots and lots of nature walks. This isn’t very different from any other year… except we usually also have plenty of play dates. Since my son’s main/only “out of the house” activity is these days nature walks, he’s more obsessed with seasons now than ever! I’ve been packing in all the fall themed activities I can come up with.

For this activity, children can color fall-themed items to visualize the addition problems before solving them. Count while coloring the first number. See half the equation colored and the other half uncolored. Count and write the second number. Then put it all together! There are 8 pages of this activity.

Add the Groups Together

For the next activity, kids add up fall-themed items in a new way. They write each part of the equation themselves on the lines by counting each group of objects separately. Then they can write the final number in the box by memory (if they’re at that stage!) or count the total number of objects in both groups to get the final answer for keep practicing. There are 8 pages of this activity.

Number Patterns

This activity helps kids continue developing their cognitive skills with number order. Instead of just a normal number line that goes from 1-10 or 1-20 that preschool or kindergarten students might be more used to, each line has a different start and end point! This means that kiddos have to really think about what numbers go in each space and what each number means rather than relying on rote counting! There are two pages of this activity.

Candy Jar Counting

For this last activity, cut out all of the candies individually. Your child will use them to fill jars to solve math problems! Have your child separate the correct number of candies for each half of the equation separately before combining them into the jar and counting them together. Visualizing the problem will help them master the material so much more easily, especially with a fun theme!
